“In my opinion the best tools we have are our own two hands, as they can craft with expression and feeling where other tools can’t. I hope the pottery I make can bring calmness of mind in a world with so much stress and worry.”
The organic shapes and rough surfaces of his pottery contrasted with a use of fine glazes and careful firing are the calling card of potter Ma Xijun. Each piece of pottery can be considered a product of experience, from carefully selected clay to glaze finish, even the smallest cup is a great realization of years of artistic dedication and an intimate understanding of tea.
Looking closer at the design of Yuan Shan (“Distant Mountain”), waves ripple in the foreground as mountains tower up to the clouds above far behind. The handprints of the potter can be traced on the surface of the cup itself, the sunken depressions intentionally left behind, revealing the mark of the artist while crafting. This is a great addition to your teaware collection, both for use and as a work of art.
