This teacup was hand-crafted by Ma Xijun of Xiwu Studio in Hangzhou. Ma Xijun is a contemporary ceramic artist who specializes in shino and wood ash glaze.
The pottery wares of Ma Xijun are renowned for their organic shapes and rough surfaces, carefully contrasted with a use of fine glazes and skillful firing. Each piece of pottery can be considered a product of experience, from clay selection to glaze finish, even the smallest cup is a realization of years of artistic dedication and an intimate understanding of tea.
Pine wood ash contains a range of naturally occurring minerals that affect the character and appearance of the glaze when firing in the kiln. This eye-catching teaware collection features complex and rich colours and textures, the result of the potter’s skillful adjustment and application of wood ash to achieve patterns formed by minerals at different temperatures during the firing process.
This teacup also features Hulu(葫芦) shape. Hulu, the Chinese word for gourd, has auspicious associations. Its pronunciation is very similar to fulu (福祿), which means happiness, or good fortune and high official rank.
This is a great addition to your teaware collection, both for use and as a work of art.
This teacup includes a protective pouch, as seen in the final photo, to safeguard your teaware during transport. Designed for both convenience and reuse, it ensures your teaware remain secure wherever you go. Please note that the pouch colour will be selected at random.
