Handmade by a young couple based in Hangzhou, China. I really love their painting style - with the simplest strokes, we are brought into a fairy tale world.

The deer handpainted on the cup is inspired by an old and beautiful story from a Mural from the Dunhuang grottoes.

In a previous incarnation, the Buddha had been born as a deer. His fur was golden, his antlers silver, and all over his hide and hooves were gems the colors of the rainbow. Such a rare a creature would surely be killed by humans for its hide, so the Deer of Nine Colors hid himself deep in the forest and avoided human interaction.

One day the deer revealed himself to save the life a drowning man, the man groveled at the feet of the Nine Color Deer, grateful to have been rescued. He begged to know a way to repay the animal’s kindness. To his surprise, the Nine Color Deer spoke and told him, “You do not need to repay me, just tell no one you have seen me.” And with that left.

But in return the man went to the king and took money in exchange for the location of the legendary nine colour deer. The king immediately set out with a hunting party, led by the very man whose life had been saved by the deer.

But when he captured the deer, he was angered to learn the truth of the situation, and instead swore to kill the man who had sold him out. The deer immediately stepped forward to protect his betrayer, explaining to the king the importance of compassion. The king praised the words of the deer and set him free. Though the deer was never seen again, his compassionate act and teaching lived on in the hearts of the people.

Due to the porous nature of clay and Fenyin glaze, there are small pits on the surface of this cup. Be sure not leave coffee or tea in the cup for long periods of time and thoroughly clean it by hand after every use in order to avoid long-term staining.
