This teapot and charcoal stove set was handmade by Minzhi studio in Jingdezhen, China.

About the charcoal stove:

In order to achieve the special finish on this stove, the potter has applied a thin layer of fenyin (a white slip glaze) to the surface of the stove prior to firing, allowing the clay beneath the glaze to reveal itself to the careful eye.

The handwritten calligraphy reads 'gun xue'(衮雪). These two characters come to mean, ‘flowing snow’. The first character, ‘gun’(normally written 滚) is missing its ‘water’radical (), which has a little story behind it:

During the ancient Battle of Yangping Pass, the Chinese general Cao Cao is said to have written the Chinese characters gun xue (‘flowing snow’) on a rock face along the Bao River, inspired by how its white foaming rapids resembled snow. When one of his soldiers commented that the character ‘gun’ was missing the water radical, Cao Cao pointed to the raging river beside him and replied, “Is this not water enough?”

About the teapot:

The porous nature of the teapot is perfect for brewing water or stewing tea. The teapot can be used either over fire, charcoal or electric stove, but must be taken off the heat while pouring cold water in directly.

The spout has been carefully crafted so it pours cleanly and won’t drip when drawing back.

Using an electric stove is easy and efficient, but I still prefer using a traditional pottery one whenever I can.

Charcoal-boiled water tastes better with it and the look, smell and sound of the quiet crackling brings so much more depth to the table. Perhaps most importantly, when I'm preparing tea this way, the whole "waiting" process makes me feel calm and peaceful, and I think this is one of many reasons why we love making and drinking tea slowly.
